The objective of this study is to increase the awareness of socially sustainable innovation process in the context of urban development. In the theoretical part of this study the principles of socially sustainable innovation process are introduced. In the empirical part semi-structured interviews were used to analyze the perceptions of urban developers on engaging residents in urban development. According to the results socially sustainable innovation process is supported by open and trustful relationship between residents and urban developers. Thus, the expertise of urban developers is related to practical knowledge and socio-emotional knowledge. Socially sustainable innovation process is also enhanced by the joint collaboration of people from different areas of expertise. This allows additional expertise and breaks up established paths.
